It's hard to make judgements based solely on this article. And to that extent I have to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. I find it hard to believe that the Mac Tech had any proof that the guy purposely, knowingly, and intentionally kept kiddie porn on his computer. However, I totally agree that child porn is disgusting and is rightly a punishable offense.

Child porn issues aside, I'm sure the Mac Tech feels morally justified in doing what he did, and perhaps rightfully so. But given the fact that he was hired to only diagnose and repair the guys machine and not inspect and make judgements on personal information and files stored on said machine, it seems to me that there are confidentiality issues that need to be addressed. I doubt very much that either the customer or the Mac Tech signed any type of agreement stating that the customer can be held liable for illegal content let alone that the Mac Tech is legally obligated to notify the authorities; but that seems like an argument for the lawyers. Ironically, I bet you dollars to donuts that if all the Mac Tech found were "illegal" mp3's or DVD's that the Tech would have just made copies for himself and never said a word.

It just seems that we have become society that rewards you for being a tattle tale and narking out your neighbor.

Not for nothing, but the Mac Tech could have "accidently" deleted the incriminating files and moved on to raping the next poor sap who can't fix his own computer.

Just goes to show you can't trust anybody...especailly a Mac owner or Mac Genius.

PC FTW!!!!!!!!

Capital punishment with no such thing as “death row” is what every country needs.

Seriously... if you are a murder why sit death row for 20 years. Have a room out back when found guilty spend $1 on a bullet and save the taxpayers a load of money.

Something like possessing pictures of naked children I’m not so sure requires a prison sentence. He’s a freak, get him some mental help and chop his nuts off. IF he took these pictures… $1 bullet.

how can you guys be happy with a 5-year min. The two people that got fined for sharing 30 or so songs got fined more than they could make in a life time, their entire life is basically destroyed, while he could walk away with only 5 years?

aerashsadg,
Lets see them try to collect that money. The people they fined will go belly up and suffer the bad credit instead of trying to pay the rediculous fine. Fear tactics.

Grieve,
that is like saying that you will use a $1 knife to chop the hands off of someone sharing illegal songs on torrents and breaking the hand of the person who downloads them. There needs to be punishment, but there is no need for it to be inhumane. Death is reserved for killers.

[citation][nom]maaksel[/nom]eh, that evidence can't be used in court - gg.[/citation]

Actually, it can. Unless the Apple tech was a government agent working in an official capacity, or at the behest of a government agent or official, then 4th Amendment protections don't apply. (Legal disclaimer - I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV).

Cases like that are the reason they don't just take out those found guilty, that man spent 21 years in prison after being found guilty for murder, only to be found innocent now. He spent more then half his life in jail over a false conviction.

[citation][nom]warezme[/nom]The Mac user is an idiot, on several levels (owning a mac, etc.) and the "genius" dude was a Narc.[/citation]

I know this didn't happen in Michigan, but by state law a computer tech is required to report any suspicious media found on a computer. If the customer is caught later on, and it found that the tech didn't report them, that tech could face 3 years. Not to mention the business loose its license. Considering that the state legislature likes to clone other states, I wouldn't be surprised if that tech was required to report him. Besides its the ethical thing to do as a tech. Being that I've got two kids myself, I'm going to report any computer I find with such filth on it, and let the law figure out who got it and or is distrubiting it.
