New to TiVo. Don't have one yet.
Been reading the website. Says you need a phone line.
We have two cell phones, but no land line since Ivan destroyed our house and we've
moved three times... and will again prolly once Arlene eats Florida (just kidding....
she's a pipsqueak next to Ivan.)

Anyway, what's the work around? Can I plug into the neighbor's line for programming
initially and then use my cable internet for future stuff?

Yes, but the first download will take some hours to complete. Once done,
you can use the internet.

Yes, that's exactly what I did, though I took mine into work. You need
to allow several hours for the initial update and setup though.

Hi,
I'm also new to TiVo. I haven't set mine up yet. After the initial setup,
if I leave the TiVo connected by phone, what settings must I make to disable
call waiting and caller ID during downloads? I don't have a wireless
network. Does it make sense to use this method over phone updates? Which
cable wireless router works best with TiVo?

There is a place in the guided setup to put the "disable call waiting"
code for your phone connection. For most people (I think?) that code is
*70 . I don't think there's any need to disable caller ID since it's
signals are sent before the call is picked up.

I don't know if I'd recommend setting up a wireless network *solely* for
your Tivo, but other would disagree. There are plenty of benefits:

- More frequent and quicker updates (including faster updating from
online schedule changes)

- Use of Tivo-to-go on your computer

- Playback of music and photos from your computer

- Use of MRV to transfer recorded content between multiple Tivos on your
network.

I don't think this is something to worry about, any reasonably good
router will work fine, as long as it's not 802.11a (which would be rare
anyway). The adapter you use with the Tivo is far more important:

Nice that Tivo is selling some of them straight from their website, some
were getting hard to find.
