There's got to be fast and decent media converting software out there. It takes almost 2 hours to convert a 720p movie a 3.5gb file from wkv to wmv. with an i5-2500k OC'd to 4.8ghz... There's got to be something that can utilize my hardware better...
Using some free thing called AVS video converter. IT seems like complete garbage..

That actually retains the video quality as original by default.

you'd think paying almost $700 for the adobe master suite 6 it would include a converting software but, the encoder doesn't work for this at all. Doesn't support formats like wkv... Sigh money money money, spend spend spend. so sick of it.

No doubt there are some "bad" free programs out there but Handbrake and MPEG Streamclip are not among them. These two have been reviewed by consumers and have been recommended by professionals.
You can try MPEG Streamclip which is a free download from Squared 5: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html
Handbrake may be able to do the job and is another free encoder: http://handbrake.fr/
You have to keep in mind that the .mkv file may be highly compressed and encoding it in a different format may be why it takes to so long to convert it.
Just out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have installed?

There are lots of free conversion programs out there. However be wary of what you install. If it is free, but isn't recommended by professionals or reviewed by consumers, that is not a good sign. I had a video converter that was free for 4 years, and not to long ago it gave me a virus that hid some important files and gave me the classic "Missing OS" message. That problem was straightened out, but when I think about what else could have happened...
