Solved! Mic not detecting input on new PC

trying to get the mic from normal sony earbuds to work on my new PC but when plugged into the mic input it doesn't detect any input audio. The mic works on other devices so I'm not sure what the problem is.
AFAIK i have all the audio drivers i need
Any chance there's a fix that doesn't involve buying a jack splitter?

You might want to let us know what laptop you have.... some systems have very specific issues / drivers that are needed.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
At the top of the window, check that it says “Microphone access for this device is on.”
If Windows says microphone access is off, click the “Change” button and set it to “On.”
