Like its predecessors, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is capable of casting its display to other screens. Miracast is the wireless display standard using by Windows and Android so is ideal in this situation. If you have a Miracast receiver in your TV or display, connecting the two is (sort of) simple.
Contrary to popular belief, Miracast is a protocol, not a product. It controls how to display content on one device on another. Windows 10 takes care of most of the configuration for you, but as always, there is a little work to do to get it working.
Miracast the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1
As Windows and Dell support WiDi, the format used by Miracast, there isn’t much to do.
1. Connect your Miracast receiver to your TV or display.
2. Turn on the TV and select the Miracast as the input.
3. Turn on your the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.
4. Select Settings and Devices.
5. Select Connected devices and Add a device.
6. Select the receiver and let Windows configure itself.
7. Select Windows key + P to select your enabled display options.
Miracast is notoriously picky and even though it uses a global standard can still cause issues, not connect or generally misbehave. Sometimes it just doesn’t work and nobody can tell you why. Some manufacturers of Miracast receives won’t even guarantee that they will work. TV manufacturers don’t guaranteed it either!
If you cannot connect your Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 to your Miracast receiver, chances are that it isn’t your laptop. Try using a different HDMI slot on the TV or try removing the device from Settings in Windows and re-adding it. You can also try manually updating drivers, removing the device from Device Manager and adding it again or rebooting Windows. One of these should work.
While wireless projection is a neat trick, if you’re depending on it to work for a presentation or anything formal, you would be better just using HDMI cable if at all possible. Otherwise, rehearse the connection well in advance to avoid any embarrassment!
