Mirror a ROM of a Smartphone?

How can a new operating system of a smartphone be copied to a computer for a future re-load/back-up in case of an unforeseen future corrupted operating system on that smartphone?

You really can't. You can get the OS through the same way you would get files for installing on a rooted device, but I know of no way to back up what you have currently on the device.

Also, do note, that unless you are rooting the device, you should be able to do a "Hard Reset" on the device any time in the future (unless the device dies, breaks, is stolen, etc.) and that would bring it back to its original state.

I'd like to get the ROM for an Asus ZenFone 2 model ZE551KL "Zoo_td" some other way then. Cannot find one on-line.
