Motherboard and PSU

Hi my motherboard has a 24 pin powerpin but my psu only has 20 so will it work or do i have to get a new psu

if the power supply a few years old then it an old at and not atx unit that needs to be replaced.

Check your connectors again. There are PSUs with 20+4 pin connectors. Just look for the matching 4 pin connector.

It really will work. 3 of those 4 pins are 3.3V, and the other is -12V. The -12V rail is not even used these days, and the 3.3V primarily is important to memory. So yes, plugging in just 20 pins will indeed work. The extra 4 pins are there just to comply with the old standards, because back in the day everything ran on 3.3V, it used to be like 12V. That is why there are so many 3.3V wires on the 24-pin ATX cable.

What does concern me is that your PSU may be an older design with little potential on the 12V rail and more capability of higher current on the 3.3V and 5V rails. I mean, it'd be a really old unit if this was the case. What is your exact unit?

it is a Bestec atx 400w- GW its a 12v/ 18A
I am not really familiar with amps and voltages so...
