My battery release switch won't close

When I try to put the battery in the battery release switch will not close automatically. Does this mean that the battery is dead? This is an HP pavilion g7 notebook.

That shouldn't mean anything about the battery itself; most likely the spring that pushes the switch back into place is broken. You should be fine, just push it closed manually to lock the battery in place.

Thank you. I was afraid to force it at all but did and now it all appears to be working fine with battery showing full charge when plugged in. Thanks for your help.
