So, my laptop for some days had this problem where it would say its not charging and I would just move the charger and it would say it charges.
Just a few moments ago I smelled smoke, and there it was. I disconnected the charger and now the cable has a hole in it.
Should I just buy another cable? or is the laptop at fault here? Or the brick itself.

Solution
I suspect the cable was damaged somehow. Probably caught in something and pinched. I agree with the last comment--get a new charger or borrow one to try. If you can get the same charger that the machine originally came with, that is best. A universal charger should be OK if you match the specs on the original charger.
