My laptop cursor is not working

My gateway laptop (powered by windows 8) has lost all touch-pad function, and the mouse has completely disappeared. There is a menu at the bottom of my screen that may have caused the problem, and I assume that this would be triggered by the F12 button on a desktop computer. I cant quite figure out how to close this menu, let alone what i had done to cause the menu to come up, and cursor to disappear.

I do not have a USB mouse that I can use, so I'm really kind of stuck here.

Please help! I'm writing this from my friends computer, and I have limited time for this to be answered!

There is often a button or key combination on laptops to enable or disable the touchpad.
