my laptop latitude 620 goes black

i have a dell latitude 620 laptop and it goes black screen once in a while if i restart it and its fine for a bit then does it again is there any way to stop it from doing that

Sounds a problem with your display adapter. You can try reinstalling the driver for it (from NVidia's website).

When the screen goes black, is the system still running (fans still spin, lights are still on, etc.)?

yes everything is still on

If a driver reinstall doesn't help - i.e. if it's not a software issue - there could be something wrong with the display adapter itself. The computer manufacturer or a good technician would need to troubleshoot that for you, I think.
