My laptop won’t detect my external gpu

I have a Dell Inspiron m5040 and I added an external gpu and my laptop won't detect it and when I go to the bios I can’t go to the graphics devices setting to change it to switchable so please help me someone.

have u tried to instal the driver for your external gpu?

Yes I have tried that already and it says that there is unknown hardware and it won’t install and one time it installed my old driver that was already on my laptop
