my new tablet wont charge

I had just gotten a new tablet and when I went to turn it on for some reason it was on 50%... So I thought was pretty cool, but after a while I went to put it on charge and came back 2 hours later and the percentage hadn't moved... What do I do?!?

Clean the charging port with a toothbrush to get any flush and rubbish out of it ... plug it in ... leave it for half a day then check.
