Mysterious HDD Password

My brothers laptop, which I maintain, has mysteriously had a password placed on the HDD. I say mysterious because he claims no knowledge. Past experience justifies my doubt, but I want to be fair. Is there any other way that this could have happened without his direct action OR could this demand for a password indicate some other problem such as a bad HDD. Trying to be fair.

contact the laptop manufacturer, usually it cause by something happened to the bios.

Interesting. Can you tell me what kind BIOS events could have caused this, other than the obvious setting of the HDD password through BIOS?

like bios got reset. no matter now, contact the manufacturer.
