Even if you run out of $ to man the station, they should just boost it to a fairly higher orbit, so there is no threat of re-entry. Then setup long term automated experiments in there w/o the humans. We could visit once a year or two to swap modules etc. Basically take an expensive manned project and make it a cheap robotic one with maid service.

[citation][nom]ProDigit80[/nom]On a second thought, even if we'd just abandon station, and let it rotate around the earth like the moon, it'd cost us next to nothing.[/citation]

The ISS is constantly sinking lower due to air resistance, even though you can't breathe it doesn't mean there's no air up there. If you leave it alone it might fall in the middle of a major city rather than the Pacific.

Take my word for it though, even if NASA abandons the ISS the Russians will take over and use it until it's really no longer servicable and needs to be ditched. Either way American's don't have any control over when the ISS will go down without Russian concurrence on the matter. It is Russian vehicles and thrusters that control when the ISS will go down eventually and the US segment has no propulsive capabilities.

Yeah, screw NASA + ISS. AIG could use that money to pay some more bonuses. GM could use that money to pay off the unions. We definitely need more prisons to keep the pot smokers off the streets. We could also buy some healthcare for illegal aliens. Isreal could use that money to build more walls + checkpoints on other people's land. We might as well save up to invade Iran or N. Korea. The Universe has nothing to offer when we have so many great endeavors here on Earth.

So where's the cure for cancer and all the incredible new technologies that the ISS was supposed to achieve through zero-G research? Wasn't that the promise that got everybody to fork out billions to begin with?

"Oh, we're sorry. Turns out we don't actually need a lab in space after all. We just wanted to see if we could get the whole world to waste frightful amounts of money on a pipe dream while millions starve to death in Africa."

The budget: The final frontier.

These are the voyages of the International Space Station.

It's 5 year mission: To explore strange new financial restraints. To explore how far NASA will go to stay relevant. To seek out new funding from different civilizations. To boldly waste what nobody could waste BEFORE!

LOX costs about 4c/pound, and is about 3/4 of the mix. Kerosene costs depend on grade, but expensive rocket-grade stuff is maybe 25c/pound. So the average mix cost is about 10c/pound. At about 5 Gallons per pound, we're at $0.01 per gallon.
