Hello, I need a laptop for IT major in software development, starting next spring I will be a junior.
1. What is your budget?
$500-$800
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15" or 14"
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Something decent
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable
5. How much battery life do you need?
at least five hours
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop?
Not really important, I have a custom desktop it.
7. Tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Writing papers, web browsing, web design, software development (probably C++ and Java).
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
500GB +
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
newegg.com, amazon.com, wherever is cheapest though.
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
2-4 years would be nice.
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Don't think I'll really need one.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
Never purchased a laptop, so no experiences.

I don't know how to use mac. I have been playing with the mac PC at school trying to figure out how to use it. so far i only got the basics down.
good screen and keyboard and Track pad doesn't matter probably use external mouse instead.
SSD dont matter but would be great to have.
