Need help for a new headset/headphone.

Well I'm currently using the soundblaster tactic 3d alpha's but I'm looking for a new better pair of headphones or a headset

Found 2 on the internet but I'm not sure which I should choose.

- Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro
- HyperX Cloud II

So please give me suggestions for the best once for gaming and music
I like base as long as it is not over the top. And if there is anything that is wireless and better that would also be great.


I'm not a audiophile so I hope I can get great answers from you guys.


PS I'm using no amp but a great mobo Asus ROG Maximus VII Ranger

For $100 dollars (as much as the HyperX retails), you can get a modmic ($50) and some headphones for $50.

if you're not an audiophile then you really do not need to spend a whole lot on headphones to be happy.

while the dt990 is an excellent set of headphones, you will need an amp with them (yes, despite you having good onboard sound) which would push your total bill up around $300 (without a mic). a bit much for a non audiophile (though still cheap when it comes to headphones!)

the dt990 would destroy the hxc2, but we are also talking about two vastly different price ranges as well.

if you're comfortable spending that kind of money, the dt990 really is a nice set of cans. very open and wide soundstage, good clarity, good bass despite it being open cans, good comfort. they have a v shaped sound signature (slightly reduced mids). the only con really is that they are hard to drive (needs a good amp) and that they are a bit harsh (however harsh can also be called detailed so its not really a con, just a different way of saying they are good for fine detail)

an example of a smoother headphone would be the hd600/650 or hd598 which arent as harsh but arent as detailed either. more of a laid back headphone.

on the cheap end of things i'd say you may be happy with the sennheiser hd518 paired up with a microphone (if you needed a mic) like the zalman clip on, moovmic or modmic.

for a little more you might like the hd558 or hd598.

the sennheiser range goes from hd518->558->598 and goes from bassier to neutral and from lower soundstange and quality to higher soundstage and quality as you follow that line. the drivers are the exact same in all 3 models, the difference in sound comes from the construction of the headphones and grille designs.

Thanks for all the replies for now. I have a Studio mic but i'm also going to lan party's with friend and I can't bring that mic with me all the time so Thats why I thought of the Hyperx Cloud 2. I still want Great/Super audio because I use my headphones daily and don't want to listen to crap if you know what I mean.

Modmic might be an option. Will still search around and tips are still welcome.

modmic is the better choice when it comes to add-on boom mics. not as good as a good studio mic but good for the price.

the hcx2 has flaws. the usb soundcard is majorly bugged, the mic has issues and build quality is a big issue. the hxc1 was better but still only good for the $100 and under range for headsets. it can not compete with hifi headphones and mics at all.

Looking at amp's right now if you've any recommendations in that way it could help me a lot.
Searching for a affordable one and maybe portable because I can use it on my phone etc.

And btw how do the dt990 for example performing in tasks like gaming?

the best amp for the dt990 is the schiit magni hands down. however, its not a portable amp.

you could power them with a fiio e12k or other fiio product though not quite as well and you're paying more for a weaker amp. it is portable though.

for easier to drive headphones you have a few more options for amps (or not using one at all for some cans). the sennheisers fall in this category. can go unamped but performs just a tad better with one.

the dt990 would be fine for gaming.

the sennheisers would be a bit smoother and more neutral sounding, the beyers will be bassier and have more detailed and brighter treble. neither is a bad route to go depending on your preferences.
