Need New Laptop for University - Any ideas?

So I need a new laptop for University and I was wondering if anybody who is/was in the same position has any ideas on which brands/types to go with for general use.

Ive done a bit of research and Im drawn towards an ultrabook and i'm not really a fan of these flippy/tablet screens. Ill be using it everyday for about 5ish hours but only use small applications however I do want a good amount of power behind it as i might use some heavier programs later. My budget is around £500-£600 plus extra stuff like external hard drive or whatever is needed. I would prefer dedicated graphics chips as ive had problems with integrated before but i understand the cost issue.

I will need to know what heavy programs you mean. This will influence the gpu in the laptop.

i'll be using things like web browser, MS Word, Skype etc so nothing heavy at all. However, I do feel that I could be using something like Photoshop but nothing heavier than that.

Try one of the acer v3 series laptops or a lenovo laptop.
