Got a HDTV been looking to get a sound system to complement it I'm a total audio noob I know very little so please correct me if I'm wrong and any advice would help. My budget is $700 I plan to get a blue ray player later so my sound system must be fully compatible with blu ray.

Does the Decoder mater and if it does what one is the best for blu ray?

As far as I can tell the only difference in 5.1 and 7.1 is 2 extra speakers (side left & side right) would their be any other disadvantages in getting 5.1 over 7.1 other then that?

A set up I was looking at do you think its a good deal?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=82-780-017&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&PageSize=10&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&IsFeedbackTab=true#scrollFullInfo

Sub is weak but comes with a free YAMAHA YMC-500 5.1-Channel neoHD Media Controller could always swap out the sub later

Post your setup if you have something better Thanks

Decoder, what decoder? to decode what?
7.1 might work better in a larger room, depends on the room.
The best systems are USED, bought at a second hand shop or garage sale.
If you buy used, you can find some really nice Hi Fi speakers, not the little tiny ones that cost $500. The big speakers cost less and sound better anyway.
But if you have a very small theater, the tiny speakers are acceptable.
