Need to change the display to a monitor

My laptop is connected to a PC monitor because my laptop's display is broken. But when i turn on the laptop the display won't change to my monitor. Please help me if you guys know what to do!

what os are you running? and also what is your laptops model? and also are you trying to connect your laptop via HDMI, VGA, Display port, DVI?
