The price hike and the division between the mailing service and online service is largely due to meddling by comcast, do a google search and read about it.

Look, if the content companies want to screw over netflix, causing higher prices and stuff, customers will leave and just torrent, giving those content companies NO profit AT ALL from it. Most people probably aren't going back to cable. I cancelled my cable a few years ago after having problems with Comcast, and I've found I don't miss it at all. Netflix isn't bad, but I'd definitely like to see more in their streaming selection before I'd be willing to drop the physical disc part of it.

Have any of you whiners ever run a business? How about the fact that 10 years ago a 3-DVD unlimited plan from Netflix was $20/month and now it's $16, can you tell me any other company that lowers their prices over time like that? And on top of that for $24/month you can get 3-DVD's and unlimited instant access to over 20,000 movies. They may not be the newest and most wanted, but it's still more than 10 times what your local video store carries. And as for the "competition", Hulu has nothing in the way of decent movies and the Amazon library is about half the size of Netflix. Not to mention how many options do those companies give you for ways to watch? Hulu lets you watch things for free on your computer but if you pay them a monthly fee you can't watch some of the same shows? AND THEY STILL HAVE COMMERCIALS. So, like grandpa always said "Buck up", it's still the best bang for the buck in the legal entertainment universe.

[citation][nom]sykozis[/nom]Considering the limited selection for streaming, and the extended wait time on new releases. The current price point for either service on it's own is excessive. Honestly, Netflix cost me more per year than renting from Blockbuster does.[/citation]

blockbuster, game, new 8$ for i believe 2 days,
movie, 6$ over night on new, 5$ week on older.

i watch at lest 2 movie a week on netflix, that alone costs less per month than blockbuster did, dont know about now, but i despise blockbuster so much because of how much they screwed me in the past i would never consider them, even if under new management.

[citation][nom]dark_knight33[/nom]It's all part of a larger conspiracy to kill Netflix. Big media/telcos don't want Netflix becoming another itunes/steam/etc. Media companies punish netflix by forcing them to delay releases for streaming & dvd, Why? So companies like Comcast & AT&T can sell you with *competing* on-demand services. Comcast & AT&T cry bandwidth exaflood and throttle/cap your service further reducing the appeal of a streaming services as a cable replacement. I feel sorry for Netflix, but they handled this poorly. How could they *not* have known licensing prices would rocket up when the deals expired? They should have gradually increased prices year over year, then used the extra cash to absorb the current increase in licensing prices, and continued the gentle price increases until the business was sustainable again. Instead, they kept the prices low until the last minute, and nobody wants to accept that their supplies are bilking them for every dime now.[/citation]

do you peal off a bandaid slowly or all in one go?
they couldnt have gradualy increased price, this isnt like gass where everyone needs it, its a dvd service that people can quit all together with little hurt if something annoys them.

It's refreshing to hear admittance from a company that they screwed up. At least now they know what has caused their decline - so perhaps get to work on reversing those unpopular changes.

WHOAH...It's 29.99????

It's $8.99 over here in Canada, and that gives me access to the US site as well when I proxy into it.

OUCH!

Maybe we will see Reed Hastings on the next season of Undercover Boss.

Seriously, Netflix was flawed from the get go because Hastings doesn't have the balls for a leadership role which is why he quit the marine corps to join the peace corps.

[citation][nom]Energy96[/nom]This failure shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Regardless of the "price hike" and service split fiasco the whole thing was implemented and marketed extremely poorly. On top of that comments by CEO and press people made the situation even worse with their obvious disdain for their own customers. They deserve to fail not because they tried to raise prices but because the entire thing was done in such a poor way that you can't help but piss people off. Whatever person's idea it was to implement these things in the fashion that they did should get out of business and stay out of it because they have no clue and will probably cripple the next company they go to work for as well.As a side note the content of their streaming service was always pretty lackluster. Most of the content was either old movies or B-rated and TV shows. Most of the good content they had was from STARZ, now that they jumped ship and signed on with Blockbuster most of what is left is trash and not even worth paying for. The DVD/Blueray service was the only part that actually had a good selection of newer movies and even that you had to wait a month to watch new releases after everyone else had them. Those things were acceptable at the old price, but under the new structure it is hard to justify, especially now that STARZ content is history.[/citation]

Starxz isn't out the door yet , peoepl are countign them as "gone already" , but the turth of teh amtter is stars is still on netflix till febuary , i haven't cancelled my subcription yet , but reccently i switched to Direct TV HD and since then i've found myself watching net flix less and less , but this well may cahnge once my 3 months of every movie channel is over , i'l wait til febuary and then decide rather to kick netflix or not.

@rykoshet

This is with all of their blu-ray rentals as well. Canadians only have streaming as an option.

i have thougth the same thing , even the sattilite companies (dish net work and direct tv ) are rolling out out ccompeteing products now. and all these large coglomerates are runing scared because of how things worked out for Itunes, so yeah they are going to do EVERY THING in thier power to crush netflix. hence why i'm still giving support to netflx and taking a wait and see approach.
the ugly thing about it is these coglomerates act like they are being "fair" and preventing monoplies, in truth coglomerates are THE NEW monopolies. For those of you that arn't sure what a coglomerate is , essientally a coglomerate is a gathering of multiple compaines that try to control a market for THIER ends. it ensures that all members of the coglomerate make money and stay in buisness , while preventing "indie" companies from competeing on the same field. the MPAA , and the RIAA are the worse coglomerates in america right now. and this buisness with netflix just high lights that point.

I've always said Netflix was a great value. I've given a one-year holiday subscription to most of my extended family for the past couple years. Its been a very popular gift. I cancelled my subscription earlier this year and won't renew any of the gifts this year. Why? Not because I don't still consider the DVD portion of their business a great value. I cancelled because of arrogant comments coming out of Netflix about how they were willing "leave money on the table" from customers like me in the bottom tier of their price range. If they don't want my business, I'll take it to iTunes. Its as simple as that. Am I angry at Netflix? Yes I am. I've turned countless friends and family onto their service. If the price increase had been presented differently, I likely would have stayed a happy subscriber...but I'm your customer. Don't ever dismiss me.

Exactly, sometimes it's all in how you say something- not in what you actually say. I still think Netflix is a great service and a great value, but the stupidity (Quikster) and Netflix's sudden arrogance (they seem to think they own the industry and can't be touched) give me a bad taste in my mouth.

For $7.99 a month I'm not really sure you can ask more of netflix. I just signed on to them and was really surprised at how good their movie collection was. I thought for that that price all the movies would be crap but it's not like that at all. And the TV shows are shows that you actually want to watch. All that in HD for this price? We really should be complaining about cell phone and internet gouging before we get to smacking down netflix.

Netflix 2012 New Years Resolution: Don't make any dumbass business decisions that will alienate the customers and drive the business into the ground.

I understand the argument that prices went up because cost wen tup, but to me the cost went up to a point beyond what I was willing to pay. simple as that. I liked getting dvd's in the mail and streaming, but for the price vs blockbuster's where I can also get games there wasn't much point to staying with netflix to me. bow should netflix beat blockbuster in price/ offer games I's switch back, dunno if that'll happen though

Demonhorde665 & Dark_knight23, you are exactly right about everything you've said and which is why I'm still going to spend money on Netflix.

Starz screwed Netflix......Price hike didn't help(even though my bill only changed by $3, which is not even worth the uproar). Why? Because they becoming way to big and these other companies who have mediocre services i.e. Comcast's "On-demand," garbage(8 years of Comcast and they still have Curb your Enthusiasm season 1 only the first 6 episodes "on demand")

If Starz & Netflix could've made a deal, the streaming content would be 1 million times better and no one would be complaining about the price hike nearly as much. I imagine that Netflix didn't think that Starz would want more money(I read somewhere the licensing cost would be was from the millions to billions of dollars if Netflix & Starz agreed on a new deal. So Starz wanted more money realizing that the profits that Netflix must be making are astronomical and what kind of money they were going to make given the new price hike would astounding. Wouldn't that put Netflix in the #1 spot? So how do make sure they don't rise above the mainstream? Clip the wings.....Starz is owned by Sony, which controls the licensing for these films, which means they ultimately control the fate(success) of Netflix.

I know in these hard economic times raising the price isn't what we all ask for. But, I don't know why any of us expected things to stay "FLAT." I can't think of anything that stays the same price for enternity....I mean the penny candy I used to buy 3 years ago is now called nickel candy. I just think Netflix got hit with a serious of unfortunate business failures that seem to ultimately force them down the path that I don't want to see them go into, failure.

So was Netflix being greedy? Maybe......Corporations are built on the principle of greed, so its to be expected. I don't mind the greed, if I as a customer get a great product.
Did Netflix try to screw their customers? No, but once that deal with Starz failed, Netflix couldn't do anything to make the price hike turd, smell like a rose.
Did Sony have anything to do with this? Hell yeah, its really their unwillingness to work out a deal with Netflix that caused all of this. I mean Sony went and signed with the competition, Dish Network, which is just another "Comcast," type corporation. Netflix would have really killed everyone if that deal went through. Think about it..........Xbox, built-in TVs & DVD players, cellphones, Ipads, & computers all can use Netflix. They were about to be the complete digital solution to all over movie & TV viewing needs without needing to download an entire clip. Sony killed my streaming Giant! 🙁

[citation][nom]rykoshet[/nom]I love Netflix. If they go down, I will have no choice but to go back to piracy. [/citation]

Amen.

Maybe the big TV studios will eventually realize the 90s are over and they can no longer charge such ridiculous prices for old content.
