I reccomend the ASUS as well!

Looks like a great computer at those specs and will definately compare well with your desktop.

You may wish to wait for USB 3.0 support though and Sandy Bridge in a future revision of the ASUS notebooks

whats the ETA on USB 3.0 and Sandy Bridge?

I don't know exactly to be honest.

All I do know is that there are two Sandy Bridge Gaming laptops being released by ASUS; the G53SW and the G73SW. The rumors state that they will feature 8Gb of RAM, USB 3.0 support, The Nvidia GTX460M, Blu-Ray drive, and the I7 2630 @ 2GHz. The G53SW will have a 15.6" display and cost aproximately $1300 and the G73SW will have a 17.3" display and cost $2500 aprox.

At the moment there is no release date set in concrete for these laptops but I would guess that they will be released in about a month.

If I were buying, I would try to wait a little while, but if you can't just buy the G53Jw because it'll still be a great machine with as good gaming performance. The Sandy bridge one will give better performance (on par with the i7 920 as rumored) and will have the perks of faster file transfers via USB 3.0.

If you're talking about the HP, go to www.hp.com and search for HP dv7t Quad Editon. I was there earlier today and was checking out HP's lappies. However note that the display is not 1080P, plus I really want a backlit keyboard with separate number pad.

Anybody know anything about Intel's WiDi tech - is it the same as wireless HDMI?

That's exactly what it is. The ability to stream to a WiDi equipped TV or monitor either with native support or equipped with an adapter.

Hmm, I'd guess there would be external USB adapters for doing the same thing, right?

On 2nd thought I guess I could live with a 15' HDMI 1.4 cable for $14.95 :p.

WiDi would be more useful on a tablet, not a gaming/desktop replacement laptop that I'd only occasionally lug around somewhere.

I would say definetely go for the Sager NP8150 here:
http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8150-clevo-p150hm-p-2972.html?wconfigure=yes
I put in the following upgrades:
CPU - i7 2820QM
RAM - 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
ODD - Bluray reader + combo drive
HDD - 750GB 7200RPM
OS - Windows 7 HP x64
This brings the price up to $1971 + shipping. If you do not want to spend that much, lower the CPU.

Alternatively, you could go for the Sager NP8130 which has a non-reflective "Matte" screen and the same internals. The only difference is that tha 8130 does not support the GTX 485 graphics card.

Did the USB 3.0 and Sandy Bridge get released yet? Held off on ordering a laptop until this came out. If so what would you recommend? Preferably looking to buy one tomorrow
