New laptop screen doesn't work

Hey guys, long time lurking these forums but first time having an issue that requires me to make a new post, hope you can help.
The screen of my laptop cracked and I got a new lcd for the same model. When I connect the new one I can hear windows booting up,fans spinning and all that jazz but the screen is completely black. If I connect the old one it works normally (except for the giant discolored crack in the middle). There's also the fact that the old screen uses an inverter and has a cable coming out of it but the new one has a whole new dongle with a couple of sockets on it. The inverter cable fits into one of the slots.
Here's what I've tried so far:
-Unplug everything and discharge by holding down power button.
-Change display by pressing Fn+f7
-Raise/lower contrast
-Connect old screen (it works)
-Connect only lcd video cable/only inverter cable (I don't know why)

Oh and the laptop model is a sony vaio vpceb1e9e.
Ask me if you need more info or pics of a specific part.

I got it off of ebay from a respected and experienced seller based in the UK with 99% positive reviews.

The old one had 30 pin connector and the new one has a converter from 40 to 30.
