new replaytv 5504 problem?

so i just got a 5504, plugged it all in an get the quick start menu,
hookup over the phone and it connects then get error msg 'socket
error' or 'unknown response'. tried several times, same thing. i
can't access any other menu either, is this normal prior to
activation? the replay website offers to activate online but i can't
access the menu to retrieve full code. i have the model and serial
numbers of course but the activate code is (apparently) only
accessible via the menu. is the unit bad, or am i doing something
wrong?
any thoughts, suggestions? tia kah

The default connection is through the ethernet connection. Go to the
Menu and Network connections and select the modem if that's what you
want to use.
