Hey, I'm looking to buy a new (or used) laptop for student use.

Main uses will be for word processing, multiple research tabs, and maybe some basic image manipulation on GIMP.

1. What is your budget?
500 or below, preferably.

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Big enough that I won't have to strain my eyes when reading for long periods.

3. What screen resolution do you want?
720 or 1080 but am flexible.

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable, I have a high end PC at home

5. How much battery life do you need?
As much as possible

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Nah

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
As listed above, nothing really resource-heavy

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
Maybe around 200GB. An SSD would be preferable for speed.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
https://www.pb-tech.com.au/ Has good off-lease laptops
MSY has a tonne of choice at http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/notebook.pdf

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
About 2-3 years at least.

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Nah don't need one

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
-----

13. What country do you live in?
Australia

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Light weight would be nice, as it will be carried in my bag on many occasions.

A few lingering questions:

Should I bother with 8GB ram? Would 4GB or even 2 suffice?

Off-lease for the cheap price and sturdiness, yes or no?
I can get an off-lease thinkpad T440 or T440p for about 450. Worth it?

Thanks in advance :)

I have a lenovo and it is great and so is the support, my nvidia chip in my laptop fried itself and lenovo just replaced it. Anyways here is the laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-80EC00N4US-15-6-Laptop-Windows/dp/B01HTAOATK
Great laptop for the price, 5 hour battery life, Plenty of power (even enough to enjoy some cs:go and rocket league thanks to the amd apu), a dvd drive if you want to watch a dvd to help you prep to a test (yes, they still put dvds in college and high school test prep books) 1tb of storage, bluetooth, ad of course Win10. A great laptop for a student.

Amazon is kinda a no go for me. USD to AUD conversion plus shipping.

I'm mainly looking for ideal specs so I can scout out something near my area.

Ok, well I looked up at the original post and went to the websites listed to see what was there and I found this : https://www.pb-tech.com.au/product/NBKASU441157H/ASUS-X441UV-WX157T-Home-Student-Notebook-14-Intel

A little above budget but it fits with what you wanted and its on a website thats preferable
Edit: I also realized it has a nvidia graphical processor, its not a great one, it might do some light gaming, but that is great for streaming video at 4k and outputing to a 4k monitor or tv.

Ah, so 4GB ram is alright for this kind of usage? In that case it should be quite easy to fit my budget.

Just mostly theres a big gap in pricing when looking for laptops with 4GB or 8GB ram.
