No color when we played a movie

We hooked up our dvd/vcr player to an HD tv and the movie played in black and white. Do we need a different connector? We tried every input and switched things around, but still no color.

If your DVD player is being connected with a single RCA composite video cable into a TV that has a combined component / composite input then you would get a BW picture. Go into the TV menu and change the input to composite or if the DVD has component video (which would need two more RCA cables) or HDMI (which would combine video and audio) use these superior connections. HDMI would give you the best picture and sound.
