OK, so, we have cancelled our service with DishNetwork and have many hours of DVR programs/movies we would love to keep before returning equipment. My question is, can we purchase a Hopper (Amazon, Ebay, etc), transfer those recordings, and still be able to watch them even though we no longer have service through Dish. In my research, it appears it is virtually impossible to save these any other way because of the encryption. We really don't want to lose them if we don't have to. Thanks.

You answered your own question. You only have access to the content because your paying DISH to unencrypt the data for viewing. Your asking for a way to 'hack' or 'pirate' content your no longer (because you cancelled your service) legally allowed to view (you do NOT OWN the content, they are OWNED by the content maker - HBO, TimeWarner, Sony, etc.). That is a violation of TOS of Tom's.
