No sound from external speakers

I have a Panasonic SA-HT650 sound system that is having no sound? When I turn up the volume it has a low hissing sound!

Could be many things, do you have it set to the right input? Have you tested several inputs? Are the speakers properly connected? Maybe the amp or some other part is broken.
