No sound on laptop

Getting no sound at all on my laptop, except for a random beep every now and again... ive already tried updating the driver in device manager but its saying unable to update, any ideas?
its a Dell Inspiron 1501 if that helps

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them ? You can do that from the device manager as well. Just click on Uninstall. Once done, restart the computer and they should be reinstalled.
