no sound through tv/soundbar

I have a Toshiba tv and recently purchased a Goodmans 20W Soundbar although when I connect the Red/white input cables and also separatly connected the line-in I don't get any sound through the soundbar.

Please help would be much appreciated.

have you set you TV audio output to go to an external device ?

There is no option on my Tv menu to set to external. Just the usual scary options.
I have it connected my soundbar through my SkyHd box and works fine but not sure if the sound would be better through the Tv. I think my Tv only has analogue input and no output which is maybe why it doesn't work through my Tv.
