No TV Signal

Wondering if anyone can help. Recently moved into a new house and not been able to get any TV signal. Previous owners advised we would probably need a booster so bought one however still no luck . There is a black box (amplifier i think) attached to the Ariel outside (make:Wolsey) tried unscrewing that but no joy as we don't really know what were looking at anyway! If anyone can help that would be great

With the amplifier connected, did you scan for channels?

Yes tried that still says 'no channels found'

If the amplifier is mounted at the antenna then there may have been a power supply for it inside the house that ran DC over the cable to it and filtered it before connecting to the TV. If it not powered up it is the same as no antenna.
If the antenna and amplifier are pre-digital TV then they may not be compatible.
