Non OS laptops?

I've been googling around for some good no OS laptops. I've heard that
most laptops sold by HP, Compaq, Dell, etc actually come from a few
sources that handle all laptop production. Has anyone gotten a laptop
directly from one of those manufacturers? Has anyone gotten a laptop
for a good price with no operating system preinstalled? Can anyone
confirm that most laptops that the big companies like Dell, HP, etc are
all actually made by a couple of companies elsewhere? (I'm going to be
putting some linux distro on it later)

Thanks

Yup, that's exactly true. One of the larger manufacturers is Compal (can't
think of the others right now) I don't believe you would be able to get a
notebook directly from them without an os. Your best bet would be to get a
whitebox notebook (chassis, screen, keyboard, mobo) and you add the parts
you want (cpu, memory, network card, HD, optical drive, etc) A few
manufacturers of whitebox notebooks are Asus and ECS. You therefore would
not have an OS installed.

I think you are going to find that any given laptop, with OS, is going to
cost you less than the same laptop from a higher-volume reseller with OS.
In large volume the Windows license just doesn't add that much to the cost.

It adds about $100 based on figures from Windows Refund Day. What's
true is that the high-volume resellers get bigger discounts on the
hardware that make up for the $100. You're still sending $100 to
Uncle Bill for nothing.

That should have been "without OS"

So let's see, there are two machines sitting here. They are identical
except that one has a little Windows sticker on it and costs ten bucks less
than the other one. By your reasoning if I buy the one with Windows I'm
spending 100 bucks for nothing. By my reasoning if I buy the one without
Windows I'm spending 10 bucks for nothing. I'm sorry, but how do I benefit
from this?

The details are irrelevant, the bottom line is what comes out of my pocket,
not what happens to it after it leaves that pocket.
