Norton Firewall simply controls which ports and programs are allowed access to outside sources, valuable, but it has relatively little to do with viruses. You should download the latest version of AVG from www.grisoft.com. It's free and does a pretty good job.

Norton Inet Security includes AntiVirus.
It is one of the best, and if you already own it, it is a no brainer.
Main complaint is it is a resource hog. But it performs fine.

Make sure you run it in safe mode. If that fails, I would run the online virus scan from Mcafee (www.mcafee.com). It's free and will give it a different look. If nothing finds it, then you're problem most likely isn't virus related.

See if there is a strange process running in the task manager. I had a friend who played a prank on me by writing a script that would make my cd drive go in and out indefinatly. It might just be something like that.
A firewall will just block viruses such as worms that try to get in with out your knowlege. If you open an email w/ a virus in it there isn't anything a firewall is goona do because you let it in.

If you are tempted to buy norton firewall or something else like it just buy a home router instead. It will do a better job at keeping things out and provide many other handy functions as well. A home router might even be cheaper, I haven't looked at nortons prices in a while but I doubt they have gone down :)
