Okay. so i have a very old denon avr receiver which does not have any hdmi ports. However, it does have an optical port. I have an asus sound card which has an optical port as well. I hooked it up to each other, and plugged in one of the speakers into the AVR, but cannot seem to get any sound coming from it. I have set the S/PDIF as the default on my computer, but nothing is coming from the speaker

Most AVR receivers require you to assign a rear panel connection (such as optical 2) to an input such as TV before you can access it. This is done in the input set up menu or there is a button on the front panel of the receiver.
If the receiver has not been fully set up make sure you connect the trial speaker to the front left or right speaker connection since to do surround you would also have to do the speaker setup as well as the input setup.
You should be able to download the owners manual if you don't have it.
