Old Games Impossible

I have a collection of older games and they straight REFUSE to play... and if they do play, they're buggy. For example... I got FF7 for the PC. It lags SO BADLY! I have a 64 bit TurionX2, why do I lag on the simplest of games? Zork Nemesis/Grand Inquisitor/Return to Zork refuse to play too.

Here's the kicker that's got me worried though... I used to be able to run RE4 on my laptop decently. Now the lag is so bad I can't play it. It's in the single digits as far as FPS is considered.

Is this possibly a virus, or even something physical that is wrong with my laptop? I need some help in diagnosing this so I can get back to my distraction from reality.

It's probably software. Your windows version is probably not friendly to the older game code.
