Hi there, bought a house recently and they had a Sony surround sound system installed, the model is a Sony TA-VE170. It was hooked up the TV using a scart adapter type lead. I want to hook the sound system up to a HD TV and have no idea what i am doing, The TV is a Panasonic Vieira. Do I need to buy some form of adapter?

That is a analog only receiver and will accept a stereo or 5.1 channel input.
To get the best sound out of it I would suggest you use one of these

Check the audio menu of the TV and make sure it can output in surround sound.
If it can't then you will instead need a DAC to convert the TV optical audio out to stereo analog RCA for the Sony.
