Onkyo DVD player discs keep skipping

My Onkyo DVD player keeps skipping, with long silences on some DVDs and then so sound after that. Can this be fixed?

It might be dirty - check your local store for "Cleaning DVD" disk (it looks like a regular CD/DVD with tiny brushes attached underneath). But if this does not help, it's time to replace the drive (contact Onkyo service for spares).

The problem you are having can also be due to a bad laser.
Very unlikely that it will be worth repairing since a new bluray player may cost less.
