Only Skype audio coming through headset

For some reason I can not get any sound to come through my USB headset except for Skype. It is already set as my default device and default communication device. I can test Skype sounds and hear that just fine. But when I test the headset through the playback devices window there is still no sound.

After continuing to play around with it, it seems that turning on the surround sound and then disabling it fixed the problem. No clue why
