Opinions/observations about HTC One camera

So I am looking at a new phone and quite like the HTC One. However Opinion on review sites is divided concerning the camera.
Is it as bad as some say it is or are they over stating the issue ?
A good camera is part and parcel and I would say expected on a top end smart phone these days. I don't understand the HTC stand on it that its a Phone first and foremost and the camera is not that important.
If the Camera is noticeably inferior to others then its a deal breaker for me really.
I like the look of the rest of the phone quite a lot so I am looking for some advice from anyone with hands on experience.
