Solved! OS Repair for Acer Aspire

Trying to help a friend in another city with an Acer 5000 series notebook. Machine does not make it to the desktop after a windows update. Want to attempt an OS repair not reinstall. The BIOS has been set to boot to CD and they have tried the recovery disc and the sytem disc only to be met with the Acer error message when no disc was in the machine. Not sure which disc has the OS files with the repair option.

Seeking guidance on how to get to the OS repair option.
