Paul Mccartney's drumming on his solo albums

Any of you by chance know how Mccartney set up his own drumming on his solo albums?
Was he playing to a click track or a performance or??

He has used band members,studio musicians and on many occations played the
drums himself.

with beatles he played on songs like:
Back in USSR
Dear Prudence
Martha My dear
Ballad of John and Yoko
with no clicktrack involved

Early solo-McCartney drumming(as on McCartney I) has no click track
You can hear tempo changes/drifting in songs as Hot as Sun.
On later albums as Flaming Pie he uses click track
On the titlesong you can hear the click track bleeding/very weak) through
his cans/headphones.

Band on the Run is McCartney on drums. With use of early "drum-machines".

He has a Ludwig drum kit(a Ringo replica) in his studio.
Macca is a good drummer on basic songs.
As he said himself: No shuffle things
but he's OK.

If you're talking about recording drums he has used two mics on the whole
set on McCartney I and II
On the others there is multi mic technique.

I think alot of the singer/songwriters that play drums...McCartney, Stevie
Wonder, Todd Rundgren... kind of play the drum track to a track in their head
and add other stuff later. Could be wrong...but it really sounds like that to
me. I've done it myself that way, so makes sense to me.

I think that drummers who know more about music and songwriting tend to
play way more musically than jthe ones just trying to provide a beat or
rythm behind the other musicians...Listen to Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd,
Eagles...The drummers in those band obviously knew a lot about music and
they just didn't only provide loopstyle beats. They played music.

I do the same thing. In fact, I often sit down to the drums and play the
song without the track running because I know I have parts to work out. I
may spend half a day on the drums for one song. It may not be good
drumming, but at least I know exactly what I'm doing; what I want to hear.
Generally, even if it's not perfect it works for me.

Then again, I'm not putting out Lucky Man Clark, either! <g> My Hot End of
a Gun CD has a number of synth and real drums, both of which were me, and
some tunes which are others playing. Sometimes I actually forget which is
which.

...... and Bob Seibenberg from Supertramp is one of my favs. The lack of
a click allows far more interesting music in many cases !

Did it like this a millions times, although I don't play anymore I found that
it was the only way to record one track at a time and keep everything in good
time.

I remember hearing that at least on some of the tunes Stevie Wonder would
have a group play the track (or a layout) initially and then he would
replace each instrument one by one. With some of his stuff I think that (or
at the very least a click) would be absolutely necessary.
