Question Permanently Locked Out of 5th Gen iPod, What Do We Do?

Around 8 years ago, my friend forgot his password to his iPod, and like an idiot, he disabled it. Recently we found it and tried to get it unlocked, so far nothing has worked. We tried using iTunes to reset the phone about 20 times with no luck. We tried other 3rd party applications to try to unlock it, which all failed. We took it to a local WiFi carrier store, which that also did absolutely nothing. We even resorted to literally calling Apple and they didn't even give us a single ounce of help. At this point I'm ready to snap the thing in half and throw it in a fire where it should belong. Besides that, is there anything else we could do about it being locked?
