Phenom II 960T unlock, problem?

Hello,

I've unlocked my AMD Phenom II 960T to 6 cores, but, Metro 2033 kept crashing, and crashing the whole system, so I locked the 6th core again, and it works fine, but BFBC2 still crashed with the fifth core. If I disable the fifth core, will it still crash?

If so, are there any ways to make the 5th and 6th cores stable?

Thanks!

Just to add, Prime95 stopped the 6th core after a few minutes, but the 5th core was fine along with all the others for half an hour.

Are you OCing the system at all?

As for disabling the 5th core, yes it will probably fix the BFBC2 problem. If you're OCing the system, depending on the settings, you could still have stability issues.

You're not going to get the 6 cores stable @ 3.6ghz (at least I've been unable to.)

If you want to run 6 I would run around 3.2-3.3ghz depending on your cooler. Run Prime95 and see if it's stable for 30min and if so, slowly increase the speed to 3.4ghz. It takes a lot of trial and error. If a core crashes, its unstable. Mine runs with 6 fine @ 3. Having trouble getting it stable at anything above that.

Probably. Completely depends on what you set the voltage to and how good a HSF you have running on it. It's going to get warm.

I've got the voltage at stock, and an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Rev 2 on it, it gets to about 36 when playing Skyrim, so heat isn't an issue, I think, but do I need to add voltage?

probably bumping it up slowly would help increase stability. I wouldn't run it with 6 cores at 3.6 though. 3.4 and increase voltage. See if that helps.

I had mine unlocked X6 @ 3.7Ghz with 1.4 vcore. The only issue I ever ran into was sometimes UCC would fail to keep the extra 2 cores unlocked on a cold boot. The TDP raises greatly when you unlock & clock/over volt the 96OT, keep an eye on temps. Also alot of games are not threaded to run on 6X cores and for gaming purposes you would be better served to clock the 4X. Most phenoms will have no problem hitting 4Ghz +

If you're running 4 cores - try

1.35 vCore
fsb = 211
multiplier = 18

you can tweak those as needed to get it faster if you want. I've seen reports of people running the 960T with 4 cores up to 4.2ghz

Depending on the board, running your vcore that high can be bad, but to each his own. :)

Silly question, but what's UCC?

Did you increase the NB when you OC'd it? If you didnt theres your issue. I can run 6 cores up to 4GHZ but without a suitable increase at the NB there is no stability. Stock volts i can easily make 3.8GHZ but again with the suitable rise in NB Frequency.

I've never played with a Thuban that didnt need its NB bumped as part of the OC.

Have a fiddle along these lines either as a quad or 5 core

Multiplier - X19
FSB - 200
NB Frequency X13 (2600mhz)
HT Link - X10 (2000mhz)

Turn OFF Core/turbo boost, C1E and cool and quiet.

I've used those settings more than once to achieve 3.8GHZ stable either as quad or hex.

The NB increase will cause the NB to heat up as long as your Mobo isn't bargain bucket it should remain safe at that level though.

Max voltage on the 960T is 1.52 volts per spec from AMD. 1.4 is well within spec and with an aftermarket cooler the +1.250Ghz OC I have on the X4 idles at room temperature and max's out at 30c. 1.4 is perfectly fine just so long as the temps are kept under control.

UCC is a utility used by Asrock for unlocking cores on CPU's.

Ah, ok thanks!

Just a quick update as well, played about an hour of BFBC2 with just 4 cores at 3.6, no problems, CPU temp was 40 C at the end, so no problems there heat wise!

I might try and bump up the voltage and the clock a bit, but not sure, what do you guys think?

A high OC on a 6 core is a bit of an ask for the Arctic cooler go get yourself a Hyper 212 Evo its a better cooler by far, cheap and will keep you nice and cool even under load.

PS, i bet you can hit 4ghz on those 4 cores.
