phone battery goes dead when off

The battery in my LG phone keeps going dead.(model VM 696). It will go dead after a few days even when it's off. I
started taking the battery out when not in use. Then it doesn't go dead and lasts for months with minimal usage. Is there some way to find out what causes this?

Sounds like you need a new battery.
