Pirates Buy More Music Than Non-Filesharing Peers

I have no problem paying for classical albums (for fidelity's sake) or for hard-to-find albums (when I can actually FIND them). I do have a problem of the record company getting most of the money.

I would buy digitally...except it's lower quality than what I can get from file-sharing. And I can usually find the hard-to-get stuff as well.

Now record companies, tell me why I should give you money for an inferior product?

I have downloaded ALOT of music, films and TV shows over the past few years, yet havn't paid for much due to unemployment.
When I do have money, I buy some of the stuff, but it's all WAY too overpriced, which holds me back.
Should prices be reduced a fair chunk, then I would pay for alot more music and films (used to have a large CD and DVD collection several years back).
The music and films industry harping on about being out of pocket, really shouldn't be boasting about having £40m+ in the bank and expect us to give a flying @:~&^%($&£ about piracy.

Out of all the downloads I have, I'd probably only 'buy' 20-30% of it, even if was priced sensibly and I had all the money in the world, because it's ended up being complete rubbish.

It accurately represents me, I always buy music that I like if I download it first or if a friend gives it to me, and I buy movies that I like if I download them. I am way too picky in what I like, and that is one good way to know I am not just throwing my money away on something I might not enjoy.

1000 people in the study... and only 1/10 download music illegally? They are missing an additional 5/10 people, lol. And ontop of that, id say that those who are willing to ADMIT to it are also more inclined (personality wise) to spend money on music

I buy an insane amount of games...
Fun running a old PS2 game on PCSX2 (Kinetica) at 2000x2000 resolution (compared to its 480p original)... it makes it look absolutely amazing.
I love PCSX2... the game quality is 100% dependent on your processing power... a 5870/4GHz i7 can still be pushed to the edge...

I've only ever boughten one music CD however... I'd rather listen to the radio than pay for my music...

Well i think personally that the music, and film industry have gotten things SO wrong.
There is a HUGE opertunity there right in front of there eyes to sell music and film.
If you could have the option to download a 256Kb MP3 or pay a little more to download an uncompressed .wav or .flac then i think they would be on the right track.
The same goes for films whether DVD or Bluray. If you could download them for a reasonable price and the quality that you are happy with then I personally think they would make a killing.
WHY cant they see this???
Instead of trying to throttle the internet to prevent downloads etc. They should be supporting downloading and adjusting there business model.
Do they think that CD/DVD and Bluray disc's will even exist in 20yrs????
Most things will be totally electronic by then................

funny story: once i listened to a song and liked it very much, after much online searching i found it on a site for sale, wanted to buy it but i couldn't because they did not accept online payment from my country. guess what? i had to pirate it [straight face]

This is simple economic theory. Those who are willing to spend the time and effort to pirate LIKE music and so they are much more likely to buy more music because they like it. I know people who don't really listen to music very much, and since music means little to them, they're not going to bother to pirate music or buy much of it either.

This is simple logic and economic theory. What's more that theory says is that those people who pirated would spend EVEN MORE money on music had there been no way to pirate or the penalties so harsh that they wouldn't consider pirating.

The study reveals more. It reveals that those who pirate are the largest enthusiasts of what they pirate. And we all know the largest enthusiasts are also the people who will pay the most to get what they love. Think about computer enthusiasts. Most people wouldn't bother to constantly upgrade their computer, put enthusiasts will pay top dollar for the fastest chip or GPU, same for these music enthusiasts. The difference is that computer enthusiasts usually don't resort to stealing CPUs or GPUs, it is socially unacceptable and there are real world consequences such as fines and jail even. What we have to do is criminalize pirating with more than just fines, but with jail time and a stain on their permanent criminal record. That would do a lot to stop pirating. It's not that hard to steal from a Best Buy or Fry's, but the consequences of getting caught are large enough to prevent most people from trying. We have to do the same with pirating.
