Play Cable/Apple Tv Audio through TV with Optical Audio?

I have never used optical audio before, however I just bought a nice Harman/Kardon speaker that has the optical audio connection and I would love for my TV's sound to play through it. I have my cable box as well as an AppleTV going into the two HDMI ports of my TV right now, so the sound goes directly through the TV speakers. Is the optical audio cord setup as easy as plugging the cord into my speaker as well as the optical audio connection in the back of the TV? Or what am I not thinking of here?

Yep. That is exactly how I have my TV setup. Just turn the volume on the TV down if you can't disable the speakers on the TV. Should be plug and play.
