Playing MID files?

I have a lot of old MID files on my PC HD, which I can play with WMP.
Out of curiosity I just installed a program called Midi Player on my
Pocket PC, and copied a few of these MID files across. I wasn't too
surprised that they don't play. Unlike some other formats (like DOX,
XLS, etc) which get converted by the copy process, these remain as
MID, but the PPC program expects files with the .MDL extension.

Is there someway I can convert MID so that my PPC will play them?

BTW, I also just discovered that on my PC, Goldwave won't play MID
either; for MIDI files it apparently expects a type called 'MIDI
Instrument Sample (*.sds)'. Is WMP the only player that can handle MID
types?

MPL is a Midi Playlist File. You don't need to convert your MID files, you
just need to create a playlist (or two) to work from - try to figure out how
to put the MID files that you've copied over into a playlist.

Sounds like you probably have IntelliArts MidiPlayer, the same one that I
have. If this is correct then this is how it works. If not then whatever
your player, it likely works in a somewhat similar way so hopefully this
will still be helpful.

1st - Click the icon on the bottom tool bar that looks like a page with a
little Plus sign in the upper right (don;t what his is called but I call it
the "Add Files" icon), then navigate to a folder containing your MID files.
The program should detect all MID files in this folder and add then them to
the current playlist (if this is your first playlist then it will be an
empty list)
2nd - Click on the next icon that looks like a page with a little pencil.
This is the Playlist editor. You should see all the MID files that were
detected listed here and you can delete files from this list, change the
order, or select an individual file to play.
3rd - go to the "Save" icon, and give your new playlist a name and save it.
4th - go to the File Open icon and you should see your new Playlist listed
there.
Finally, use the Paylist Editor to access indiviual songs. or just click the
Play button to play the whole list

Excellent - thanks a lot. It turned out that something had got weirdly
scrambled. When I selected the folder
\CF Card\My Documents\Midi
then viewed the playlist, it was full of gibberish (unprintable
characters etc). But viewed in Resco Explorer, or from my PC with
ActiveSync, the sample MID files I'd placed there were correctly
displayed.

Anyway, I deleted that playlist, then copied some more MID files
across to the folder, and tried again. Success! That is, I can now
select a track and play it.

I cannot get Save to work. Indeed the only functions accessible appear
to be Remove and Play. I wonder if that's because I am still using the
unregistered trial?

BTW, am I right that the only fast way to select a large number of
contiguous files in the playlist editor (say to remove them), you must
use the keyboard and Shift key, tapping the lower track first to avoid
the scroll bar being obstructed?

Thanks again for setting me on the right road. Heaven knows how that
'corruption' occurred, but I wouldn't have persevered without your
post.

Discovered shortly after posting that you can only Save after closing
that Playlist window.

Maybe I shouldn't have copied across so many (300 or so) files to
start with. Editing the resultant large playlist with MidiPlayer
seems unduly tedious. Not only is there no simple way of selecting a
large contiguous block, but you cannot select non-contiguos tracks
either. Presumably a better approach is to organise the files first
into sub-folders (Classic, Pop, Dance...)?
