Power button flashes

If I don't power off my laptop each time after use I have to pop the battery in and out before restarting it. The power button will then just flashes if I close the lid to hibernate, such a pain.
How do I fix

Post is a bit confusing, are you saying if you leave the laptop running it goes to sleep and it won't wake up if you tap the power button? If you close the lid and it goes to sleep, if you open the lid and hit the power button is does not work?

You should list your laptop brand and model. Have you checked for a newer BIOS and drivers? Chipset and Power Manager drivers especially.
