My 5504 RTV is scheduled for delivery on Monday.
This model seems to be part of the latest model series. Is it considered
any better than any of the previous models or is there an older model out
there that RTV people seem to prefer over the newer models?

Many of us prefer the 50xx series which has Commercial Advance and Internet
Video Sharing. Otherwise, these machines are idential to the 55xx series.
I have two 5040s with lifetime activation and just ordered a 5504 refurb for
next to nothing (after rebate). I've only used IVS once or twice. Not
vital IMO, but nice to have. Most of the time CA works, and I like it fine.
On those shows where it doesn't work right, I just turn it off. My 5504
will be a spare machine, so I'll probably activate it at the reduced rate
$6.95 per month just to make sure it's functioning properly and get my
rebate. :)

My guess is you'll love your 5504, even though it doesn't have the automatic
CA and IVS.

Margaret

It is better than those models previous to 5000, but a LITTLE worse
than the 5000-5499 models. The 55xx Replays are identical to the
5000-5499 models except for the lack of two features. These features
(Commercial Advance and Internet Video Sharing) are considered very
valuable by some people but of little value to others. The 55xx is
still MUCH better than no Replay at all.

The best Replay is the 50xx series, the 55 is identical in every respect
except that automatic commercial advance is NOT and option and internet
video sharing is not an option... but the hardware is identical I have
one 50, one working 55 and one 55 in a box waiting for my car to get
back so I can ship it back to DNNA for warranty repair

Depends if you value commercial advance a lot. I do, as it's the #1
reason I went to DVRs in the first place. A 55xx would simply not do.

I initially had no plans on using IVS. It sat unused for a year or so.

Then I discovered poopli, and now it's wonderful. It makes a great
backup, for when a show is missed for whatever reason (start watching in
mid-season, cable outages, football games, last-minute schedule changes,
special news reports, bad reception, conflicts, etc). I really didn't
understand how useful it is until I tried it. For me, IVS is useless
without Poopli. Don't use it a lot, but when I do, nothing else comes
close.

And whenever I seemed to be saying otherwise, that was just a personal
statement. The main thing is that there is a considerable variation
between people.

I've always gone to the newsgroups, where many shows are already
available, and (depending on your news server) you may be able to
download them MUCH faster.

There is one little problem, lack of a decent search engine.

Normally those with "binaries" (and some word suggesting video) in the
name. There are a lot of such groups, including those for popular
shows. Any newsreader should let you search a list of groups.

News Rover 10.3 and a subscription to 1 of the huge NG providers that
News Rover's computers index.

I occasionally used to use newsgroups or torrent sites:

1) Replayers have access to hundreds of thousands of shows, with CA.
2) You get the Replay's quality at the record speed. Most of the
usegroup stuff are grainy avis that look like some 14 yr old kid did it
to fit on a vcd.
3) You only have the most recent stuff from the most popular (weighted
to sci-fi and teen hits) series.
4) Bittorrent servers are being hammered for copyrights. You always have
to spend an hour or 2 trying to find anything.

Of more or less value for different people.

I dodn't see much that's too low in quality.

Largely true with ANY source. There's just more variety in newsgroups.

The last thing I downloaded was an episode of "Enterprise". A simple
and fast search of the "Star Trek" binaries newsgroup found it.

Hmm, I have an aversion to peer file sharing software. Being a computer
professional, I just can't make myself put this stuff on my PCs. I know not
all of it contains spyware, but it still gives me the creeps. I'd much
rather do a direct download from a remote site. Will have to give the
newsgroups a look-see.

Note that most posts of large files (like A.V) use a type of encoding
called yEnc. Outlook Express does not support this, but Agent
(http://www.forteinc.com) does. It's also a better newsreader,
especially for binaries.

That's a joke right?? All the newsgroups added together wouldn't offer
a fraction of Poopli.com's number of series and episodes thereof.

Poopli.com has all eps of season 3. I had a drive zapped by a power
failure that had season 3 that I didn't watch. I got them back from poopli.

You probably have very limited experience. That happens.
