Section 107 of the copyright statute permits "Fair Use" (see 17 U.S.C. s 107). It is a flexible standard, that many (including me) feel permits ripping of CDs to put on an MP3 player.

The Supreme Court affirmed the principle of ripping in the Sony v. Betamax case, where the Court officially sanctioned "time shifting" (that is recording a copyrighted work on a media for (1) viewing at the viewer leisure and (2) viewing on a machine of the viewers choice).

Sounds like the RIAA is trying to scare people into not exercising the rights granted to them in the copyright statute and by the Supreme Court. The real telling fact is, however, has the RIAA sued anybody for copyright violation for ripping a CD they own to their iPod, or for that matter making a mix tape?
